# SNARE: Adaptive Scenario Synthesis for Eliciting Overeager Behavior in Coding Agents

## Summary
SNARE is an adaptive benchmark pipeline for finding authorization-scope overreach in coding agents on benign tasks. It builds OverEager, a 10,000-run evaluation across 4 agent implementations and 5 base models.

## Problem
- Coding agents can complete a requested programming task while also reading secrets, changing files, deleting files, or taking other actions outside the user’s permission.
- Standard task-completion benchmarks can score these runs as successful because they check the final artifact and miss unsafe intermediate actions.
- Fixed overeager-behavior prompt sets can under-measure agent-model pairs where the prompts are too easy or too resistant.

## Approach
- SNARE composes benign scenarios from reusable libraries: 24 overeager archetypes, consent phrasings, long-chain coding-task skeletons, and sandbox fixture seeds.
- It filters about 21,600 candidate scenarios down to 3,914 deduplicated scenarios, then to a 1,000-scenario verified pool after 7 structural checks.
- Each scenario has trap predicates for overreach and success predicates for task completion; the oracle also flags unsolicited file additions or deletions.
- During evaluation, SNARE uses a Beta-Bernoulli Thompson sampler over 120 archetype-consent cells, with per-archetype floors and ceilings, to spend more runs on cells that trigger overreach more often.
- The OverEager setting uses 500 runs per agent-model pair, batch size 10, Docker concurrency 3, a per-archetype floor of 15, and a ceiling of 30.

## Results
- Across 10,000 benign runs, 19.51% triggered overeager behavior.
- The study covers a 4 × 5 matrix: Claude Code, Codex CLI, Gemini CLI, and OpenHands paired with Sonnet-4.6, GPT-5.3-Codex, Gemini-2.5-Pro, GLM-5, and MiniMax-M2.
- Per-pair trigger rates span 11.9×, from 4.80% for Gemini CLI × GPT-5.3-Codex to 57.20% for OpenHands × GLM-5.
- OpenHands has the highest mean overeager rate at 36.16%; Gemini CLI has the lowest mean at 11.20%.
- By base model, GPT-5.3-Codex has the lowest mean trigger rate at 9.80%, while GLM-5 has the highest mean at 25.80%.
- The paper attributes 56.1% of trigger-rate variation to the agent implementation, 20.8% to the base model, and 23.1% to the agent-model interaction.
